It's difficult for me to to get engaged with a book or story when the main protagonist is the very person I strive not to be. That is the complete opposite of what we teach our children. Why is this a big deal to me? Because I'm a happily-married man with two children who literally cannot understand why anyone would willingly give up the role of parenthood to pursue selfish desires. The main male protagonist, Sanders, is a selfish fool. Maybe it's not fair to judge a book based on its characters, but I argue that the sum of a story is directly related to the way each character is portrayed.
